Arrive in Siliguri
Your adventure begins in Siliguri, where you’ll be surrounded by the buzz of anticipation. Our experienced tour lead will brief you about the ride you have ahead of you. The day ends with a hearty dinner that’s a delicious prelude of the epic days to come.
Siliguri to Phuentsholing
With the morning sun as our companion, we ride along the contours of the Teesta River and over Coronation Bridge, and begin our ascent into the foothills of the mighty Himalayas. By noon, we reach the tranquil Phuentsholing and clear our entry permits. This serene and quaint town, where we rest and recharge, is just a sneak peek into the tranquility of Bhutan.
Phuentsholing to Paro
Riding is Bhutan truly begins with a climb up into the Himalayas towards Gedu. The road serpentines through small Bhutanese villages. Some of the views are splendid . We reach Paro with a stop over for lunch. Paro is a quaint Bhutanese town nestled in the Paro valley along the beautiful Paro river that flows through it.
Paro – Haa – Thimphu
Today we explore a lesser ridden part of the Bhutanese Himalayas towards the West. We ride through a steeply ascending narrow road towards Chele la, The highest pass in Bhutan. Chele la stands @ 13,083 feet / 3988 m with splendid views of Paro valley and Haa valley from each side. Taksang Monastery or Tiger’s nest can be seen on a clear day. The ride isn’t easy and is technical so brace yourselves for a truly magnificence ride. As we climb down into Haa valley we stop for an early lunch and ride on to the capital Thimphu and check into our hotel.
Thimphu – Phobjikha
We set off today towards Phobjikha, a high altitude valley of the black necked cranes. After a brief stop at Dochula we ride on towards Phobjikha. This U shaped valley is revered for the black necked cranes and is a very important site for the Bhutanese religiously and culturally. Besides this the beauty of the valley is just stunning. On arrival in the Phobjikha Valley in the last week of October, the black-necked cranes circle the Gangtey Monastery three times and also repeat the process while returning to Tibet.
Phobjikha rest day
Today is do nothing day. When you are at such a divine place, the right thing to do is, nothing! Sit and admire the view, take a stroll down to the local market or ride around the small valley exploring a few off-roads. Enjoy the serenity and calmness that we do-not experience in the hustle and bustle of Urban life.
Phobjikha – Bumthang
Leaving the beautiful valley behind we set off towards Bumthang in central Bhutan, the Swiss alps of the east. After crossing the mighty pass Pele la we descend into Trongsa. We ride past the beautiful Trongsa monastery which once controlled trade between east and west and then past some really sharp roads that hang on to the cliffs. A very different landscape. We ascend again to Yutong la @ 3400 m and then into beautiful Bumthang.
Bumthang – Exploration Day
Bumthang also known as the Swiss alps of the east is another beautiful valley with pine tress and beautiful views. It comprises of 4 distinct regions that speak their own dialect. We explore few places like Jampa Lakhang a 7th century sacred dzong, Thang valley and Mebertso, known as the burning lake, before returning for lunch and an easy evening at our Hotel. Bumthang will truly mesmerize you with its beauty and gracious people.
Bumthang to Mongar
The ride today will take us past Ura and through very different topography where the road go through forests with trees hanging off cliffs giving it a ‘lord of the ring’ effect through Thrumshing la @ 2800 m. The pass is notorious for its weather change. From here we’re in Eastern Bhutan and descend quickly into the town of Mongar at a low altitude. Mongar is the biggest town in Eastern Bhutan and is mainly a trade town.
Mongar – Lhuntse – Mongar
A ride towards the North to a remote small town of Lhuntse 77 kms from Mongar is on the cards. We ride past picture perfect villages into a region that is famous world over for a unique Bhutanese weave Khishutara, that we see the people wear and that adorn peoples homes. We visit Khoma village and after brief weaving tour return back to Mongar for the evening.
Mongar – Trashiyantse – Trashigang
From Mongar we take the road towards Trashiyantse, a town situated in the eastern most part of Bhutan bordering Bumdeling. The roads wind around the mountains in long winding curves. The place is famous for its unique sized Chorten Kora. After our visit to Chorten Kora we ride down towards Trashigang. The town is literally built on a cliff and is surrounded by deep gorges. The views here are beautiful and provides a different landscape from what we have experience earlier in our tour.
Trashigang – Samdrup Jhonkar – Guwahati
Our ride in this gorgeous land comes to an end. We head off from Trashigang into the rugged green lower Himalayas where ther serpentine narrow roads cross Yongphul la and then onwards into Samdrup Jhonkar the border point. After our Immigration, we ride on further towards Guwahati by early evening to recount the trip and rest and relax.
Depart from Guwahati
With a mixture of gratitude and fondness, we bid our final farewells. The journey that painted our days with wonder and camaraderie now gracefully concludes. It’s time to board our flights, but the memories and connections we’ve gained in Bhutan will journey with us back home.
