Arrive in Mysore

Bengaluru

Mysore to Ooty

We leave the Heritage City after an early breakfast and ride towards the city of Ooty. We continue on the Mysore Road for a few hours passing some quaint villages of Karnataka, before turning towards the national reserve forest of Bandipur. If we are lucky, we will have some sightings of our friends from the wild as we meander through the beautiful forest roads. Right in the middle of the forest, we pass the check post and cross over to Tamil Nadu. Then, we start our ascent towards the Nilgiris and Udhagamandalam – better known as Ooty, the Queen of the Hills. The chill in the air and the beautiful vistas welcome us to the favorite hill station of the south.

Ooty to Valparai

The cool air changes as we climb down from the Nilgiris and ride towards Coimbatore. And after a great local meal at Pollachi, the flower capital of Tamil Nadu, we turn towards Sethumadai to catch sights of some real village sights, and then start our climb towards Valparai. Once we pass the Aliar Dam, a green carpet of tea plantations appears and becomes a great backdrop for our journey towards the small hill station in Valparai. The quaint accommodation at Valparai allows us to soak in the colonial legacy of this land.

Valparai – Exploration Day

You have the whole day to yourself to explore the many attractions of Valparai and catch some local delicacies at the various restaurant options that will be made available to you.

Rest day at Valparai

Valparai to Kodaikanal

The journey towards Kodai takes us past the holy town of Palani and the 7 hills in the Palani range. The narrow and scenic mountain roads take us through picturesque hills where voluminous waterfalls and sweeping spice gardens inundate us. You will be tempted many times to pause, capture and reluctantly ride on. The twisties and hairpins add to the excitement as we reach Kodai in time for a late lunch. The evening mist and the cool breeze makes a wonderful setting for a fun evening at this gorgeous hill paradise.

South India

Kodaikanal to Rameswaram

We leave early from Kodai with one final look at the lake in the middle of the town. Once we descend from the Kodai hills we take the long highway stretch towards Madurai, the ancient temple town known for the famous Madurai Meenakshi Temple.

South India Tea Plantation

Rameswaram to Karaikudi

We leave the temple town of Rameswaram in the morning and head towards Dhanushkodi which is in local language known as Arichal Munai which is the end of the land. This is the closest point to Sri Lanka and this is also, the mythological Ram Setu point, Sri Lanka is barely 20 kilometers from there. It’s an amazing ride through the strip of land which juts into the sea, where you have the ocean on either side, which is one of the many natural wonders of India, and it’s a must -do road. Early morning we go there, enjoy the surroundings and then come back to our hotel in Rameswaram, pack and leave from there for 150 kms ride to Karaikudi. Karaikudi is also known as Chettinad which is famous for the cuisine that comes from that land which is known as Chettinad cuisine. Predominantly known for its masalas and non veg food but has amazing options for vegetarians as well. It is a land of very rich business people; the Kariakudi Mansion or the houses, though not as big as palaces, but are an architectural marvels. They have all the splendor and glamor associated to palaces of the yesteryears’. We spend the night here and enjoy the Chettinad food.

Dhanushkodi

Karaikudi to Yercaud

The next day we move from Karaikudi and ride to the heart of Tamil Nadu towards the northern part of the state. You can see the heartland Tamil Nadu which is filled with paddy fields and other cultivation land but this probably will be the warmest day of riding because the heartland Tamil Nadu is quite warm right through the year. We have got wonderful coconut plantations and we get to savor the very unique red coconut water in many places on our way to keep ourselves cool. We pass some really big towns like Madurai and come towards Namakkal and then head towards Salem which is another industrial town. From Salem we turn towards Yercaud which is a hill station with beautiful winding roads to climb up to this cool top compared to the heat in the plains. We spend the night at a little resort in Yercaud surrounded by coffee plantations and a lake.

Yercaud to Kolli hills and back

Kolli Hills or Kolli Malai stands at 1300m has nothing significant to offer except the 72 breathtaking hairpin bends that one needs to take on the way up. This is easily the most challenging and enjoyable mountain road for bikers in all of India. No exaggeration here Just watch out for fellow Rossis and Marquezes who will be doing knee down at breakneck speeds while you ride here. After the absolute thrill ride to the top and back, we come back to Yercaud climbing another 30 odd hairpins on the way. A day guaranteed to satisfy all the true-blue riders in the group.

Riding through Kolli Hills

Yercaud to Bangalore – Departure

We leave early from Yercaud and pass Salem town towards the Tamil Nadu Karnataka border. The highway takes us through Dharmapuri and we stop for an early lunch at Murugan’s Idli Shop in Krishnagiri. We can bet that you haven’t had tastier idli before. With a full stomach, we ride into the city of Bangalore and end the tour by early afternoon. Well, it’s then time to see off your fellow riders who by the end of the tour become friends for life.

Everything was organized very professionally and the tour group were in the very capable hands of Anil and Sagar from the Goodwind team. I absolutely loved the off-beat routes that Anil and Sagar took us through and I have some very unique memories thanks to that. The stays were fabulous, the food was even better and the company was the best.
